2026 Best Locations for Senior Pictures in South Jersey

Every senior session starts with the same question: Where are we going?

And honestly, it’s my favorite question to answer. I’ve been photographing seniors all over Gloucester County and the surrounding area for years now, and I’ve shot at spots most people don’t even know exist. South Jersey has way more going for it than people give it credit for: open fields, historic parks, charming downtowns, easy access to Philly, and of course, the Shore. The hardest part of picking a location isn’t finding a good one. It’s narrowing it down.

Below are the locations I actually recommend to my senior clients, places I know shoot well in different seasons and different lighting conditions. I’ve cut out anything generic or overdone. These are the spots worth your time.

One thing to keep in mind: most sessions include two or three locations, indoors and a couple of outfit changes. So you’re not locked into just one look. We can do something natural and earthy at one spot and switch to something more urban or beachy at another; how much time you have is the biggest factor.

Natural & Outdoor Spots

This is where most South Jersey sessions start, and for good reason. The natural light out here — especially in the hour before sunset is something else entirely. These are my top picks.

Washington Lake Park — Sewell, NJ

This one is right in our backyard and it earns its spot on this list every single time. Washington Lake Park has a little bit of everything: calm water views, wide open grassy areas, wooded paths, and some genuinely interesting art installations scattered throughout. What I love about it is the variety. Within one location, you can get a totally different senior picture looks just by walking two minutes in any direction. I’ve shot here in every season and it never gets old. If you live in the Sewell or Washington Township area, this is a natural first choice.

Alcyon Lake — Pitman, NJ

Alcyon Lake in Pitman is one of those places that has a real personality to it. The walking paths that run along both sides of the lake give you a nice mix of open waterfront shots and shadier, more intimate tree-lined corridors. In the fall, it’s genuinely stunning that the foliage reflecting off the water is the kind of thing that stops scrolling. I also find that this location tends to put seniors at ease. There’s something about being in a relaxed park setting that makes the whole session feel less like a photoshoot and more like just hanging out, which always shows in the final images.

Rowan University Campus — Glassboro, NJ

This one surprises people. The Rowan campus in Glassboro is legitimately a great photo location. You’ve got classic brick collegiate architecture on one end, sleek modern buildings on the other, and some well-maintained green spaces in between. The walkways and courtyards hit beautiful light in the late afternoon. If you’re heading to Rowan — or just love that academic, collegiate look — this is a no-brainer. It also pairs really well with downtown Glassboro for a full session with range.

Urban & Downtown Spots

Not every senior wants to be standing in a field. If you’re drawn to brick walls, street art, busy storefronts, and that more editorial feel, these locations are for you. Urban backdrops create a completely different energy in photos — and when you mix them with natural shots from the same session, the contrast is really striking.

Downtown Pitman, NJ

Pitman is genuinely one of the most photogenic towns in South Jersey and it’s still relatively underused for senior portraits, which I appreciate. Broad Street has this great mix of colorful storefronts, brick facades, and a walkable energy that photographs really naturally. It doesn’t feel forced or staged. I’ve done some of my favorite sessions in Pitman. It has real character.

Downtown Glassboro, NJ

Glassboro has come a long way. The stretch of High Street has a good mix of historic storefronts, newer spots, some murals, and varied textures that work really well as backdrops. It’s not as polished as some places, which is actually what makes it interesting to shoot in. The imperfections give it personality. I like to pair this with a Rowan Campus session, so you’re getting architectural variety and the combination of the two gives you a real range of images.

Philadelphia — Just Across the Bridge

This is the one that always gets the best reaction when I suggest it. We’re in South Jersey and Philadelphia is practically in our backyard, and it’s one of the best cities in the country for portrait photography. Old City has cobblestone streets and architecture that feels straight out of another era. Fishtown has incredible street art and a raw, creative energy. Rittenhouse Square is beautiful and upscale. South Street has personality everywhere you look. If you want senior portraits that none of your classmates are going to have, a golden-hour Philly session is the answer. Every single time.

Jersey Shore Senior Pictures

Since we’re in South Jersey, the Shore is part of who we are. Beach senior portraits have a timeless quality that holds up decades later, and the light over the water at golden hour is something you can’t fake or recreate in a studio. These are the shore locations I send my clients to most.

Ocean City, NJ

Ocean City is probably the most popular shore location for senior portraits in South Jersey. The beach is wide and clean with good dunes, the boardwalk gives you a classic backdrop that reads immediately as Jersey Shore, and the drive from Gloucester County is totally manageable. We always schedule shore sessions around golden hour, that last hour or so before the sun goes down, when everything turns warm and soft. Bring multiple outfits. A casual beach look and something a little more dressed up both shine here, and they look completely different in photos, even at the same location.

Senior Pictures for Athletes — On the Field, You Earned It

This is something I’m genuinely passionate about, which gets me excited to do every time.

A lot of senior photographers in South Jersey don’t have a sports background. I do. Sports and athletic photography is a huge part of what we do at MISSION, and that means I actually know how to photograph athletes, not just how to get you to hold a ball and smile. Some of the most powerful senior portraits I’ve taken were shot right on the field, court, or mat where that senior spent four years of their life grinding.

Think about what that means for a second. Your soccer cleats are on the same turf where you played your last home game. Your lacrosse stick, your football, your leotard in the place where it all happened. That’s not just a senior portrait. That’s a document of who you actually are.

We can build your entire session around it, or just work in one athletic segment alongside your other looks. Either way, it tends to be the images that families hang on the wall. If this resonates with you, reach out and let’s talk about it.

So, How Do You Actually Pick?

Here’s the honest answer: you don’t have to figure it out on your own. When you book with MISSION, we have a planning call before your session where we go through all of this together. But if you want a starting point, think about these things:

  • What’s your personality? Are you someone who feels most like yourself outdoors, in the studio or in a city? Laid-back or more editorial? The location should feel natural to you, not chosen for someone else.
  • What time of year are you shooting? Summer is great for the Shore and golden-hour fields. Fall is peak season for parks with foliage. Winter can work beautifully if you’re willing to lean into it.
  • Do you want variety in your gallery? Mixing in studio or outdoor natural and one urban spot gives you a completely different range of images, something for the wall, something for Instagram, something for grandma.
  • Is there somewhere that actually means something to you? Some of our best sessions have been at a senior’s own school field, a park they grew up near, or even their own backyard. Don’t underestimate the power of a location that has real meaning behind it.

One More Thing…Book Earlier Than You Think

This comes up every single year; summer dates fill up fast. Most South Jersey schools have yearbook photo deadlines somewhere between late September and early November, which means your session needs to happen before that, plus enough time for editing and delivery.

Most families reach out in April, May, or June for summer sessions. If you’re reading this in spring, right now is the time to lock something in. If you’re already in summer and haven’t booked yet, just reach out immediately and we’ll figure out what works.
